East Bay Hills. Part of the Water series.

East Bay Hills. Part of the Water series.

Last week we flew down to LA to see the Richard Diebenkorn exhibit at the Orange County Museum. It was 80 works of The Ocean Park Series. Awe inspiring, and painful. The cigar box lid paintings were beautiful. The prints and gouache works on paper were wonderful. And the large canvas collection were truly a sit down moment. Nice gallery, not crowded. These paintings felt like looking at the process and path of secrets. So many layers, so much process. Very moving and spectacular.

Plein air in the Berkeley Hills. Thick paint, bugs and leaves. It’s all there. Lucky there is not a paw print from Brutus.

Warm up drawings. I’m addicted to this new black charcoal that has no midtone. It’s like ink. Dense and black. And pastels. An immediate application of color.

Something about a large wet painting when you leave never looks the same when you return. Working very large for me.

That was interesting.

About:

Dodie Shoemaker lives in Oakland California. She received her BFA in 1982. During a twenty year career as an Art Director in publishing, she continued her formal artistic training in Painting and Printmaking at San Francisco Art Institute, California College of the Arts and UC Berkeley. Medium of choice is oil paint.

Born in San Francisco, California, she is deeply influenced by the California landscape that includes farmland, long highways, water and sky.

My relationship with the landscape coincides with where I am at the moment. For several years it was driving to Sacramento each week and the I-80 corridor. For the past five years it was the Highway 5 route to LA. The farmland, vistas, the auquaduct, changing sky’s and golden hills in the summer would never cease to inspire me.

Currently I am drawn to water. The restricted boundries of the urban oasis, The bay, delta, and shores I can never reach. My local backyard.

In the redwood park series, the Oaks and Redwoods reach tall from our trails, creating shapes, shadows and light that takes your breath away. The Tree series are like little gesture warm up paintings and studies.

Thanks for looking.
